Beijing subway

The Beijing Subway has a total of 23 operating lines, including 22 subway lines and 1 airport express. Line 1 and 2 are the oldest routes, as well as the main routes for the in-city traffic. It is very convenient to take the subway to many popular tourist attractions.

Operation time: Around 5:00-23:00. Each line varies slightly, so please refer to the on-site bulletin.

Ticket price: A one-way ticket for the Airport Express Line is CNY ¥25. For the other lines, the ticket varies according to the distance. For example, CNY ¥3 for destinations within 6 km (inclusive); CNY ¥4 for 6 to 12 km (inclusive); CNY ¥5 for 12 to 22 km (inclusive); CNY ¥6 for 22 to 32 km (inclusive); for distances over 32 km, CNY ¥1 is charged additionally for every 20 km. At present, the farthest distance between two stations in the subway line is 88 km, with its fare being CNY ¥9. Please swipe the one-way ticket or all-purpose card when entering or exiting the subway. One-way tickets can be purchased at the ticket booth and the automatic ticket vending machine.

Beijing bus

Beijing has a well-developed public transportation system. There are more than 1,500 regular bus lines in the urban and suburban areas of Beijing (excluding diversified lines such as business shuttle bus and shared bus), with bus routes leading to almost every community. Most routes are open from 5: 00 to 23: 00. In addition, there are 36 night shift lines running at night, which can meet the travel demand of hot spots at night.

To check the travel routes, please visit the official website of the Beijing Public Transport Corporation. You can also download the APP 'Beijing Public Transport' (北京公交) or 'Ruubypay' (亿通行) in your APP store.

At every bus stop, there will be information about all buses stopping at that location, including the name of the station, its number, the names of bus stops along the line, the ticket fare, and the origin and terminal schedules.

Passengers taking the bus can purchase tickets by methods such as scanning QR code, swiping Public Transit Card, paying in cash, etc.

Passengers taking the bus in the suburbs will be charged a rate based on distance travelled.

After getting on the bus, please indicate your terminal station and buy a ticket from the ticket sellers.

Bus fare: Beijing bus fare is priced by segments, and the bus fare within 10 km (inclusive) is 2 yuan. For those travelling beyond 10 km, each additional 5 km will cost an additional 1 yuan. You can enjoy a 50% discount when using the Yikatong card to take the bus, and there is a 50% discount for the regular card and 75% for the student card within the city area. For travel routes outside of the city, please refer to the current policy.

Taxis in Beijing are plentiful, affordable, and well-managed thanks to the unified management. You can easily find taxis on the road.

Tips

1. Taxis in Beijing are colorful, yellow body, dark blue, green, or purple car roof. The logos of taxi companies are printed on the vehicle door and the top lightbox of the taxi. A taximeter is placed over the console. Without all these things, the taxi is probably unlicensed and you should refuse it, even if the driver solicits you. The taxi drivers in Beijing are real warm-hearted although they are not good at English. Hence, it would be better to write down or print the destination in Chinese to show them.

2. Don't try to hail a cab at a crossroads, as taxi drivers cannot stop their cars within 30 meters from an intersection to pick up passengers.

3. Smoking is banned from all Beijing taxis.

4. Taxi drivers are not allowed to refuse to take passengers for any reason, once the passenger is in the car. When cabbies refuse to drive you to the destination you want, you can make a complaint call at (8610)96103 or (8610)96106.

How to hail a taxi in Beijing

Stand by the roadside or at a designated taxi stand in Beijing and wave down a cab. Avoid intersections; otherwise, the driver won’t stop. Do not do it at the Ring Roads, urban expressways, and highways.

Car rental in Beijing

Rental car services are accessible at Beijing International Airport as most auto rental service providers have counters at there. The stores of CAR (神州租车) can be easily found in Beijing. The costs of most car rentals are below CNY ¥200 per day (about 30 dollars). You can book your car rental service online or go to the store in person. AVIS can provide services with multiple languages including English, French, and Spanish. 

And there are also some car rental platforms, like izu, eHi, Wukong, zuzuche...

Before you rent a car, you should show your valid documentations, usually a passport and driving license. It should be noted that a provisional driving license can be granted by the Beijing Traffic Management Bureau.
